Women's Basketball cruises to SAC Championship Game

HICKORY, NC – The Catawba College women’s basketball team earned its second consecutive berth in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship with an 82-64 victory over Tusculum College Saturday afternoon in the semifinals at Catawba Valley Community College. The Indians, the top seed in the tournament, improved to 21-8 on the year and will face the winner of Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne Sunday at 4 p.m. for the title. The fifth-seeded Pioneers end the year with a 12-17 mark. Catawba scored the first 12 points of the game and raced to a 46-27 halftime lead. The Indians, who led by as many as 24 in the second half, shot a tournament-record 42 free throws. The Indians were paced by senior forward Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, N.C.) with 22 points and 12 Catawba players tallied at least one point and two rebounds. As a team, the Indians out-rebounded Tusculum, 55-33. “The girls were just focused from the beginning,” said Catawba coach Angie Morton. Locklear, the conference’s Player of the Year, played just 19 minutes, hitting eight of 10 field goals. “I don’t think anyone could stop her today,” Morton said. “She could have had 50 points and 30 rebounds if she had stayed in the game. She’s definitely one of our leaders and she led us today.” Senior guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) added 14 points and six assists for Catawba while sophomore forward Kelley Karns (Pilot Mountain, N.C) was one of three Pioneers to score in double figures with a team-high 12 points.
