HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Catawba edged host Lincoln Memorial 60-57 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Tuesday night at Turner Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Railsplitters go to 1-4 and 0-3.

Taisha DeShazo hit two free throws with five seconds left and the Catawba defense did not allow LMU to get off a final shot to grab the win. The Railsplitters had hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining to get within 58-57 after the Lady Indians had missed two free throws.

DeShazo finished with 13 points, while Shemya Stanback added a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds and handed out five assists. Janiya Downs also reached double figures with 12 points.

Lincoln Memorial used a 10-2 run to grab a 19-11 edge after a quarter. Catawba responded in the second quarter to rally back to trail 28-27 at the break.

The teams continued the tight battle in the second half. DeShazo put the Lady Indians up 44-42 entering the final period after a three-pointer with 21 seconds left. LMU scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and led 53-51 with 3:15 to go following a three-pointer by Geovana Rios.

Stanback hit a pair of free throws to tie the game with 1:47 remaining and Catawba followed with baskets by Downs and DeShazo to go on top 57-53 with 39 ticks left. LMU got a layup by Mikayla Kuehne with 28 seconds left and Stanback hit the second of two free throws with 21 seconds to go to leave Catawba up 58-55.

After a pair of missed by Downs at the line, Alex Canady was fouled on the rebound. She made both free throws, but DeShazo answered and Catawba took the win.

LMU shot 53% to just 32% for Catawba. The Lady Indians forced eight more turnovers and held a 35-32 edge on the boards. Catawba pulled down 17 on the offensive end that led to a dozen second-chance points.

Kuehne led the Railsplitters with 17 points. Irelynn Davisson added 14 points and Rios 11. Kuehne also had five rebounds and five assists.

Catawba is back home in Goodman Gym on Saturday as the Lady Indians host Mars Hill at 2 p.m.
