Baseball drops finale at Mars Hill, 11-5MARS HILL, NC – The Mars Hill Lions (7-15/1-2) defeated Catawba College (15-9/2-1) this afternoon at Henderson Field by a score of 11-5. MHC pounded out 15 hits in the win while Gary Lee (Chesapeake, VA) pitched 7.2 innings scattering nine Catawba hits to pick up his third win (3-2) of the season.The Lions scored three runs in the first inning highlighted by back-to-back-to-back doubles from Lane Strobel (Walkersville, MD), Joe Castagner (Bushnell, FL), and Matt Reed (Tampa, FL). MHC then plated a single run in the second inning to lead 4-0 after Castagner singled to drive in Jason Yelton (Burnsville, NC). Catawba got on the board in the fourth inning after Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) scored on an error. MHC answered with a run of their own in the bottom of that inning when Castagner again singled to score Yelton. Catawba then scored three runs in the fifth inning to cut the Lions lead to 5-4. Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) singled to right field to drive in two of the three runs. MHC then added four insurance runs in the sixth inning to lead 9-5. The inning was capped off by a three run homerun by Reed, his eighth of the year. Catawba scored once in the eighth after Scott Searles (Boston, MA) scored on a fielder’s choice. MHC then scored their final two runs of the game in the bottom half of the eighth when Jeff Mayo (Enfield, CT) singled to center to score Reed and Castagner. Reed led MHC at the plate going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a double, a homerun and four RBI. Strobel also went 2-for-4, both hits doubles, and two runs scored. Chris Merchant pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief not allowing a hit. Southard led Catawba going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Rimer was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) took the loss (2-2) on the mound for the Indians throwing 5.1 innings.
