Softball evens record with sweep of WSSU

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College picked up a doubleheader sweep from visiting Winston-Salem State in softball action on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 9-1 and 10-3 to even their record at 11-11. The Lady Rams fall to 3-4. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) tossed a two-hitter in the opener with seven strikeouts in the five innings. Catawba jumped on WSSU early, scoring five runs in the opening inning. At the plate, Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) had a pair of hits, while Stacey Handy (Advance, NC), Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) and Vivian Lee (Salisbury, NC) each had two RBI. After falling behind 2-0 in the second game, Catawba scored four times in its first and plated six runs in the third to take control. Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) and Jess Hull (Westville, NJ) each had two hits, while Myers had three RBI. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) earned the win in relief. She allowed just one hit with four strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings. #####
