Softball splits with Alderson-Broaddus

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College and visiting Alderson-Broaddus split a doubleheader in softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Battlers took the opener 4-2 in eight innings, while Catawba fought back with a 12-1 decision to gain the split. Catawba stays even at 12-12 on the year. Lady Indians won by the scores of 9-1 and 10-3 to even their record at 11-11. Alderson-Broaddus is 1-3. Catawba battled back from an early 2-0 deficit in the opener on a RBI single by Vivian Lee (Salisbury, NC) in the second and a RBI groundout by Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) in the third. Katie Roush (Pt. Pleasant, WV) had staked the Battlers to the lead with a two-run single in the second. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) took the mound in the third inning and scattered five hits with 10 strikeouts in two innings. She got out of a second and third with no out jam in the sixth by striking out three straight batters. The Battlers would plate a pair of unearned runs in the extra frame to steal the game. Phelps had a pair of hits for the Lady Indians, while Kara Newton (Irvine, KY) went 3-for-4 for the Battlers. Catawba jumped out quickly in game two, batting around in a four-run first. Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) had a key two-run single with two outs. The Lady Indians added three more in the second to take control. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) was 4-for-4, while Shannon Handy was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Lee and Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) each had two hits. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) allowed just a single run on two hits while recording 11 strikeouts in the five-inning win. #####
