Comeback Bid Falls Short In 13-12 Overtime Loss Against Gannon

SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College women's lacrosse team nearly overcame a five-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to comeback against Gannon University, but the Golden Knights pulled out the victory over the Lady Indians in overtime, 13-12.

Catawba had to fight from behind at the start when Gannon got out to a three-goal lead in the first three and a half minutes of the opening period. The Lady Indians answered back with two free position goals by Caroline Falcone and another goal by Colleen Green that was assisted by Mercedez Boucicaut. With 3:09 left in the first, the score was tied 3-3.

The Golden Knights scored with 12 seconds left in the first, then again two and a half minutes into the second quarter to jump ahead by two goals. The Lady Indians again showed their resiliency by clapping back with back-to-back goals to tie the game yet again. This time, Karmen Board got her first goal in a Catawba uniform, and Boucicaut scored her 15th of the season to notch it up at 5-5. This score remained going into halftime.

Gannon came out hot in the third quarter by scoring six of the first seven goals in the period. This gave the visitors an 11-6 lead. Charlize Skepple got CatU on the board just before the fourth quarter to make it an 11-7 game heading to the final regulation period.

The Lady Indians kicked it into another gear in the fourth quarter with five unanswered goals to charge back into the lead. Caroline Falcone had two free position goals, and five in the contests, then Boucicaut, Joey Baillie, and Michaela Lantz each scored to give the home squad a 12-11 lead with 2:35 to play.

Gannon struck in the final thirty seconds to force the game into overtime, then won the opening draw control of the extra period. The Golden Knights scored with 1:56 left in the first overtime period to end the Catawba comeback bid and escaped with a 13-12 win, ending CatU's three-game winning streak.

Catawba's next game will be on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. against Converse inside Shuford Stadium.
