Seven-run first propels Baseball over Anderson

SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College posted a seven-run first inning and went on to defeat visiting Anderson 13-7 in baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba improves to 17-9, while the Trojans fall to 6-16. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) and Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC), who had a grand slam, each had four RBI for the Indians. Catawba’s first seven batters reached base, six via hits, with Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) driving home two with a bases-loaded single and Davis following with a three-run homer. The sophomore continues his clutch hitting with 46 RBI in 20 games. Baker would add his grand slam in the third to stake the Tribe to an 11-0 lead. Justin Sterling (Beaufort, SC) put the Trojans on the board in the fourth with a grand slam, while the Indians added two more runs in the sixth, one on a solo homer by Davis, his second of the day, and another on a RBI-single by Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC). Anderson closed out the scoring in the eighth. Bryan Cato (Leesville, SC) singled home a run, while Tony Graham (Abbeville, SC) had a two-run single with two outs, but Caleb Owen (Westminster, SC) was cut down at third to end the frame. Paul Link (Cleveland, NC) earned the win on the mound, his third without a loss. He tossed six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Baker and Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) each had three hits for the Tribe. Owen and Cato led Anderson with a pair of hits. #####
