Mark Smith, Nick Lefko lead Tribe in sweep of WingateSALISBURY, NC – Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) led the way in game one, while Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) drove in the winning run, in the nightcap, as Catawba College took both games of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader from the visiting Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park Final scores were 12-1 and 4-3. Catawba improves to 19-9 overall, 4-1 in the SAC. Wingate drops to 9-20, 3-2.GAME 1: INDIANS 12, BULLDOGS 1 The Tribe jumped on the board first with a five-spot in the second inning, taking an advantage of a Bulldog mishap. Scott Searles (Boston, MA) drew a bases loaded, one-out walk to put the Indians up 1-0. After a Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) infield fly, Mark Smith followed with a grand-slam for a 5-0 edge after two. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) would hit his team-leading ninth home-run of the year in the third, apart of his 2-for-4 outing for the Indians. Catawba would put two more on the board in the fourth, as Lefko scored on a Searles triple down the RF line, Searles later scoring on a wild pitch. Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA), who went 2-for-4 in the first contest, would add an RBI double in the fifth and seventh, in between Mark Smith’s second dinger of the game, this time a two-run shot, to give him 6 RBI in game one. Wingate’s Kirk Matthews (East Bend, NC) would have a 2-for-3 performance, with an RBI, for the Bulldogs. Thomas Wilson (Smithfield, NC) picked up his third win of the season, throwing six strong innings, scattering just six hits while striking out six. GAME 2: INDIANS 4, BULLDOGS 3 (8 innings) Catawba struck first in game two with a Giles solo-shot in the second and Mark Smith’s third blast of the day, a two-run shot in the third. The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the sixth as Tim Bowman (Low Gap, NC) singled up the middle, bringing home Andrew Conner (Randleman, NC) to cut the lead to 3-1. Pinch-hitter Jeff Vitaris (Seneca, SC) followed with a double down the RF line, scoring Jon Svanda (Chesterfield, VA) and Tim Bowman, who hustled in from first, tying the nightcap at three. Matt Smith (Browns Summit, NC) singled off the right elbow of Wingate starter Chad Yow (Stanfield, NC), the first base hit since Mark Smith’s HR in the third inning, to start the bottom of the eighth. After a Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) fielder’s choice, Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) smacked a double down the LF line to put runners at second and third, with one out. Davis loaded the bases on an intentional walk, setting up Lefko’s game-winning single to right, two batters later. Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC) pitched 2 1/3 innings of perfect baseball, picking up his second win of the season. #####
