Ettinger tabbed as SAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

ROCK HILL, SC -- Newberry College's Rebecca Backman and Catawba College's Lindsay Ettinger were named this week's South Atlantic Conference Softball Position Player and Pitcher of the Week selections announced Monday. Ettinger, a 5-5 freshman pitcher from Pasadena, MD (Chesapeake HS), posted a 5-1 mark on the mound with a 1.26 ERA and 32 strikeouts as the Catawba Lady Indians went 7-4 on the week. In Catawba's 5-1 win over Bluefield, Ettinger threw a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts. She led the Lady Indians to a 3-0 win over Alderson-Broaddus by notching 11 strikeouts in five innings of work while allowing one run on two hits. Ettinger is 9-6 on the season with a 2.03 ERA and has recorded 77 strikeouts in 93.0 innings of work. Backman, a 5-5 freshman utility player from Columbia, S.C. (White Knoll HS), hit .519 at the plate with one homerun and eight RBI while leading the Lady Indians to a 6-4 mark on the week. Backman notched a pair of doubles on the week while splitting time at catcher and designated player. She went three-for-six at the plate with three runs scored, one double and three RBI as Newberry split a doubleheader with Wayne State University. In the Lady Indians' sweep of Avila, Backman went five-for-eight with a pair of RBI. She hit a lone homerun of the week versus Georgia Southwestern when she went three-for-four with three RBI. The South Atlantic Conference players of the week are determined by a vote of the league's eight Sports Information Directors. #####
