Mark Smith named SAC Baseball Position Player of the Week

ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba shortstop Mark Smith and Tusculum's Eric Butler have been named South Atlantic Conference Baseball Position Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, league officials announced Monday. Smith hit .400 for the week with 10 RBI in helping Catawba to a 5-0 record, including a weekend SAC sweep of Wingate. Against the Bulldogs, the Browns Summit, NC, native hit three home runs and accounted for eight RBI. He had a pair of home runs and six RBI in the opening-game win and added a two-run homer in a 4-3 win in game two. The 6-0 junior fielded 17 of 18 chances at shortstop. Butler pitcher tossed a two-hit shutout to pace the Pioneers to a 3-0 South Atlantic Conference win over Newberry College. The freshman hurler from Morristown, TN, went nine innings, walked one and struck out five in posting his second consecutive complete game victory. The East High School product retired the first 10 Newberry batters in order and allowed only two players to reach second all day. Butler has pitched 11 straight scoreless innings and has posted a 3.86 ERA while the opposition is hitting a mere .175 against him. The SAC position player and pitcher of the week are determined by a vote of the league's eight sports information directors. #####
