Baseball takes split in DH at PresbyterianCLINTON, SC -- The Presbyterian College Blue Hose and Catawba College Indians split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. Catawba won the opener 7-2, while the Blue Hose rallied for a 10-9 win in the nightcap. Presbyterian goes to 14-14 overall and 3-5 in the SAC, while Catawba goes to 23-10 and 6-2. The Indians struck early in the opener, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The inning was highlighted by Spence Southardís (Greensboro, NC) double off the fence that scored Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC). Down 3-0, PC was able to score one run in the bottom of the inning with senior Curtis Bell (Gilbert, SC) hitting a single to drive in Donald Sheppard (Sylvania, GA). Catawba scored three more runs in the top of the third with Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) hitting a single to drive in two runs. Both Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) and Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) scored on Gilesí single. In the top of the eighth, the Indians were able to score one run to increase their lead to 7-1. Mark Smith drove in sophomore Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) on a sacrifice fly. Presbyterian rallied for one run in the bottom half of the inning with sophomore Nick Hoffner (Elliot City, MD) hitting a single to drive in pinch runner Matt Sparrow (Lake City, SC). The Blue Hose could not mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth and fell to the Catawba Indians 7-2 in game one of the doubleheader. Junior pitcher Thomas Wilson (Cleveland, NC) picked up his fourth victory of the year while PCís Travis Hill (Rock Hill, SC) picked up the loss. Catawba would score seven runs in the opening frame of game two. Presbyterian walked in three runs, while Mark Smith capped the frame with a bases-clearing double. Scott Searles (Boston, MA) also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. PC got right back in the game in its first. The Blue Hose scored four times as both Hoffner and Matt Bodie (Aiken, SC) would drive in runs during the inning for the Blue Hose. After Catawba loaded the bases with no outs in the third and failed to score, the Blue Hose exploded for four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a lead 8-7. The inning was capped off by shortstop Evan Sowell's (Chesterfield, SC) triple that drove in three runs. PC's senior Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC) gave the Blue Hose a two run cushion in the bottom of the fifth by driving in freshman Ben Tankersley (Evans, GA). The Blue Hose would tack on a much-needed insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with Robert Rodebaugh (Marietta, GA) hitting a sacrifice fly to give PC the 10-7 advantage entering the last inning. Catawba made things interesting, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh. However, the Indians comeback fell short leaving the bases loaded. Catawba's Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC), and Searles both had RBI singles in the inning for the Indians. PC's White picked up his fourth victory of the year while Nick Mayle (Landis, NC) picked up the loss for the Catawba Indians. #####
