Baseball rallies past Belmont Abbey for 9-7 winBELMONT, NC -- Catawba’s baseball team stayed hot, winning for the 20th time in the last 23 games, as the Indians rallied to defeat host Belmont Abbey 9-7 on Thursday afternoon at Crusader Field. The Tribe improves to 25-10 overall, while Belmont Abbey falls to 6-32. The Indians jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after two innings. In the second, Catawba scored first on an error then got a three-run homer from red-hot Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC). The junior is hitting .357 with seven homers and 26 RBI over the last 10 games. Matt Waldron hit a three-run home run for Belmont Abbey in the third to bring the Crusaders within 4-3. Mark Smith would drive home a run on a single in the fourth to give the Indians a 5-3 edge before Belmont Abbey took the lead in the sixth. The Crusaders benefited from a pair of Tribe errors with two outs to plate four runs in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. In the eighth, Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) tied the game for Catawba with a one-out, two-run homer. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) doubled home Nike Lefko (Faith, NC) for the go-ahead run with two outs. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) followed with a RBI single to cap the scoring. Freshman Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) retired three of the four batters he faced in the ninth to earn the save. Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) picked up the win in relief. He allowed two hits and two unearned runs in two innings of relief. ######
