Baseball sweeps Newberry to stay tied for SAC leadSALISBURY, NC Ė Catawba College took both games of a South Atlantic Conference twin-bill from the visiting Newberry Indians by final scores of 13-6 and 13-1 on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba used 15 hits in game one, while Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) tossed a complete-game in the nightcap, striking out 12. Catawba jumps to 28-10 overall and 9-2 in SAC play. Newberry falls to 15-18 and 3-8. Back-to-back doubles from Billy Alm (Pine Plains, NY) and Stuart Kay (Greer, SC) put Newberry on the board in the third inning of the opener. Catawba would capitalize on two Newberry errors in the bottom-half of the frame, tallying three times. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) picked up a sacrifice fly for the only RBI in the inning. Newberry tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth, returning the favor by taking advantage of two Catawba errors with Dustin Smith (Conway, SC) contributing a two-run single. Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, SC) gave Newberry a lead in the seventh with a two-run double, giving the visitors a brief 6-4 lead. Catawba would respond, taking the lead for good with a three-spot in the bottom of the seventh. Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) picked up a RBI with a sacrifice fly to center. Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) and Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) also tallied RBIís in the frame, Lefko via a groundout and Mark Smith from a base hit. In the eighth, Catawba exploded for seven runs on six hits. Mark Smith and Boyles each picked up two more RBI with base hits in the inning, while Lefko added a RBI double. Nick Mayle (Landis, NC) pitched two innings of relief picking up his sixth win of the season. Catawba would score in five of the six innings in the nightcap, including the first four, en route to the victory. Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC), Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) and Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) all picked up RBIís in the first. Southard had another RBI in the second with a single. Lefko had led off the inning with a solo-blast, his third of the season. Lefko and Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) added RBIís in the third with a pair of singles. Davis picked up his team-leading 62nd and 63rd RBI in the fourth with a hard-hit single, part of a four-run outburst in the home-half of the fourth. Lefko picked up his third RBI of the contest in the sixth and Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) picked up a RBI with a pinch-hit single up the middle. The lone bright spot for Newberry in the nightcap came in the top of the seventh as Gilmore Stevens (Edgefield, SC) tripled down the leftfield line scoring Jeremy Harris (Pomaria, SC), who doubled. Both hits came with two outs in the frame. Fairweather scattered six hits, striking out 12, in the complete-game win, improving to 4-2 on the year. ######
