Baseball competes sweep of Newberry with 12-4 win

SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College completed a three-game sweep of visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference baseball action, taking a 12-4 decision on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba improves to 29-10 overall and 10-2 in the SAC, winning for the 23rd time in 26 games and maintaining a share of the league lead. Newberry falls to 15-19 and 3-9. Catawba took a 2-0 lead after an inning, getting two-out RBI hits from Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) and Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC). Catawba again scored with two outs in the fourth to extend its lead. Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) collected a RBI single, while Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) followed with a two-run homer for a 5-0 advantage. Newberry got a leadoff homer by Travis Moore Blythewood, SC) in the fifth to get on the board and scored a second run in the frame on Stuart Kay’s (Greer, SC) two-out single. Catawba came right back with two of its own in the fifth, Davis doubling home a run and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) getting a sacrifice fly. Catawba tacked on three more runs in the sixth to go on top 10-2 and got a two-run double from Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) in the seventh for a 12-2 lead. Ryan Easterby (Charleston, SC) plated two runs on a single in the eighth for Newberry to close out the scoring. Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) earned the win on the mound for Catawba. The senior scattered eight hits over seven innings, allowing two runs and recording four strikeouts. Davis led the Tribe offense with three hits, moving within one RBI of the school record of 66 in a season. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) also had three hits for Catawba. Kay, Moore, Easterby and Dean Walker (Afton, TN) each had two hits for Newberry. ######
