Volleyball stuns SAC-leading PresbyterianSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba upset league-leading and visiting Presbyterian in five games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 30-27, 30-24, 16-30, 23-30 and 15-13. With the win, Catawba improves to 9-13 overall and 4-8 in the SAC. Presbyterian falls to 19-7 and 10-2. Catawba jumped out to its lead behind the hitting of Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE) and freshman Hope Miller (Newton, NC). LaRoche had nine kills, while Miller added six as the Lady Indians took the opening game 30-27 and the second 30-24. In the third game, Presbyterian's Aisha Walker (Atlanta, GA) began to bring the Blue Hose back. Her kill gave Presbyterian a 10-6 lead and two more after a brief Catawba rally made it 12-9. She added three consecutive kills to bring the Blue Hose to game point. The fourth game was tight until Presbyterian gained some breathing room at 21-17. They sent the match to a fifth game with a 30-23 win. The fifth game was tight throughout. Catawba led early at 3-1, but the Blue Hose stormed right back to grab a 4-3 lead on an ace by Leah Easler (Lexington, SC). Miller would give Catawba the lead at the changeover with a kill, but Presbyterian scored the next three points, the last on a Walker kill, to go up 10-8. Catawba would answer with three straight points, a kill by Talita McCain (E. Spencer, NC), an ace by Lettie Wilkes (Williamsport, MD) and a kill by LaRoche gave the Lady Indians an 11-10 lead. Presbyterian took the next two points on a kill by Lindsay Mitchell (Chapin, SC) and another by Debbie Tamosaitis (Lexington, SC) to go on top 12-11. The next two points belonged to Catawba on a Blue Hose hitting error and an ace byElizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC). Presbyterian would even the game at 13-13 on a kill by Mitchell, but Catawba took the last two points on a kill by LaRoche and the final kill from Miller on match point.
