Motsinger's clutch double helps Softball to sweep of Newberry

NEWBERRY, SC - Catawba College swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from host Newberry on Thursday afternoon at the Newberry softball complex. The visiting Indians rallied for a 2-1 win in the opener, then started quickly and held on for a 5-3 nightcap win. Catawba improves to 22-19 overall and 3-1 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 19-18 and 1-3. With Catawba down 1-0 and two outs in the seventh inning of the opener, Janie Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) doubled in a pair of runs. Newberry failed to close out Catawba when pinch runner Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) advanced to second on a dropped ball. Mehl scored the tying run, and Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) followed for the win. Newberry put the first run on the board with a Christina Kirby (Delmar, DE) single, scoring outfielder Jen Wilson (Orlando, FL) in the fourth inning. Newberry starter Kayce McLeod (Newberry, SC) held Catawba in check for most of the game, allowing only three hits, no earned runs, and striking out seven batters over seven innings. Catawba pitcher Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) gave up four hits and struck out five to win the pitcher's duel. The right-handed freshman improves to 13-8 on the year. The visiting Indians patched together a four-run second inning to sprint to a 5-0 lead in the nightcap, holding off a late Newberry charge to take its second game from the home team, 5-3. Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) started the offense with a one-out single up the middle. An error on a fielder's choice and a base on balls loaded the bags, and a second walked scored Phelps. Junior catcher Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) then knocked a two-RBI double to right field, and Liz Corbett's (Severn, MD) sacrifice fly scored another Catawba run. Trailing 5-1 in the seventh frame, senior Lucki West (College Park, GA) opened the inning with a single. Designated player Julie Wideman (Greenwood, SC) singled, putting two on with two outs. Behind 0-2, Wilson delivered an RBI single to right that scored West's pinch runner Diana Dupre (Myrtle Beach, SC). Freshman catcher Rebecca Backman (Columbia, SC) followed that with a single to center, scoring Wideman. Handy, pitching for Catawba, put the brakes on the comeback, striking out the final batter in three pitches. Kirby falls to 9-9, giving up three earned runs and seven hits. Handy improves to 6-5 with a three-hit, three-run, three-strikeout performance. #####
