Softball set win record in split with Tusculum

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College and Tusculum split a doubleheader in South Atlantic Conference South Atlantic Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. Catawba took a 10-1 decision in the opener, while the Pioneers held on for a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Catawba stands at 23-20 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while Tusculum is 24-8 and 3-1. The win by the Lady Indians in the opener set a new school record for victories in a season, topping the old mark of 22 set in 1991. The Lady Indians got a two-out, two-run homer from Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) to grab a 2-0 lead after one inning in the opener. The Pioneers got a run back in the second on a single by Ali White (Zionsville, IN), but Catawba would use a five-run second to break the game open. The Lady Indians sent 10 batters to the plate and got RBI singles from Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC), Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) and Liz Corbett (Severn, MD). Lindsey Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) tossed a complete game to improve to 14-8. She allowed six hits with six strikeouts over the five innings. Handy, Rhoades and Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) had two hits for Catawba, while Brie Griffin (Glendale, AZ) had two hits for the Pioneers. Tusculum got a two-out, two-run single from Mitzi Foust (Andersonville, TN) in the second and a two-out, RBI double from Griffin in the third to take a 3-0 lead in the nightcap. The Lady Indians got on the board in the fifth on Jeana Craver’s (Lexington, NC) two-out single and closed within a run after a RBI groundout by Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) in the sixth. Phelps opened the seventh inning with a double for Catawba and pinch-runner Jessica Hull (Westville, NJ) was sacrificed to third, but Tusculum starter Natasha Lindsey (Auburn, WA) got a come-backer and a diving stop by third baseman Pat Jones (Crawfordville, FL) to end the game. Lindsey, after taking the loss in game one, allowed just five hits and two runs in a complete game effort to improve to 13-4. Only one of the runs against her was earned and she posted five strikeouts. Griffin, Jones, White and Jessica Taylor (Greeneville, TN) all had two hits for TC in the nightcap.
