Davis set RBI mark as Baseball rolls to sweep of LR

HICKORY, NC -- Catawba College swept host Lenoir-Rhyne in a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bears Field. Catawba won by the scores of 10-2 and 16-6. The Indians improved to 31-11 overall and 12-2 in the SAC, while the Bears fall to 18-19 and 4-10. Catawba's Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) powered the Indian offense with 11 RBI for the afternoon, including a grand slam in the second contest. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) set a new school record, reaching 68 RBI after the doubleheader. The Indians raced to a 6-0 lead after five and a half innings of the opener, highlighted by Davis' solo home run in the fourth that tied David Trexlerís 1999 mark of 66 RBI in a year. He would break the mark the following inning on a RBI single. Baker had a two-run single in the sixth and Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) a two-run single in the seventh as the Indians broke the game open. The Bears had cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth before the four-run seventh by the Tribe. Catawba's Thomas Wilson (Smithfield, NC) pitched the complete-game victory for the Indians, limiting the Bears to one earned run while striking out 10. L-R freshman Jesse Jordan (Englewood, NC) suffered the loss. Baker finished with three hits and four runs batted in while Davis added two hits and two RBI. Sophomore first baseman Matt Sigmon (Catawba, NC) went 4-for-4 for the Bears. Catawba exploded for 11 runs in the opening three innings of the nightcap. Baker cranked a grand slam in the third. The Bears tried to rally, with four runs in the bottom of the third inning, but the deficit was too great to overcome. Catawba would plate five more in the top of the sixth, including a two-run single by Baker, to put the game out of reach. Baker was 3-for-5 with seven runs batted in to lead Catawba in game two. Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) and Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) chipped in with two RBI apiece for the Indians, while sophomore center fielder Matt Wiley (Charlotte, NC) was the Bears' top offensive player, going 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in. Catawba's Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) earned the win, pitching five innings and striking out six. Senior Jeremy Krech (Rock Hill, SC) took the loss for L-R. ######
