Baseball takes #3 regional ranking into key weekend series

INDIANAPOLIS – Catawba College is ranked third in the initial 2004 NCAA Division II South Region Baseball rankings. The top four teams in the region at the end of the regular season advance to the NCAA Tournament. Catawba is currently 31-13 and 12-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. Rollins College is the top ranked team in the region, followed by the University of Tampa, last year's NCAA National runner-up. Florida Southern follows Catawba in fourth, while SAC-member Tusculum is fifth. Catawba will battle Tusculum this weekend at Catawba’s Newman Park in a key league match-up. Friday’s single game begins at 6 p.m., while Saturday’s doubleheader begins at noon. Both teams are tied atop the SAC standings with 12-3 marks. Catawba boasts the nation’s #13 offense, averaging 8.8 runs a game, while the Pioneers rank 17th in fielding at .965. Catawba sophomore Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) leads NCAA II in runs batted in at 1.84 per game. He also ranks 19th in home runs (0.32) and is 18th with a .798 slugging percentage. Junior Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) stands third in doubles per game at 0.56 and is 20th with a .455 batting average. Thomas Wilson (Smithfield, NC) ranks 20th in strikeouts per game (11.0), while Nick Mayle (Landis, NC) is 22nd with six pitching victories. NCAA II South Region Poll 1. Rollins 2. Tampa 3. CATAWBA 4.
