Baseball moves into first place with sweep of TusculumSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College moved into first place in the South Atlantic Conference with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Tusculum in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians won by the scores of 9-3 and 7-3. Catawba improves to 33-14 overall and 14-4 in the SAC, while Tusculum falls to 28-20 and 13-5. In the opener, Tusculum put single runs on the board in the first, second and fourth innings off Catawba starter Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC), who allowed just one hit over three and one-third innings, but issued seven walks. Catawba was able to answer the Pioneers as Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) had a two-out, two-run double in the first and Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) a one-out RBI double in the second to put the Tribe up for good. Catawba led 5-2 entering the fourth, but Tusculum drew three straight walks with one out to chase Snyder. Tribe freshman Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) entered and after surrendering a sacrifice fly, kept the Pioneers off the board the rest of the game. Link allowed five hits over his five and two-thirds innings of work and walked one as he improved to 6-1 on the year. Every Catawba player had a hit with Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI in the 10-hit attack. Josh Wolff (Louisville, KY) had two RBI for Tusculum. Each team scored in the opening inning of the second game. The Pineers got a RBI single from Guy O’Connell (Perth, AUSTRALIA), while Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) plated the Tribe run with a two-out walk. Catawba would leave the bases loaded in the first and stranded two each in the second and third before breaking the game open in the fourth. Lefko led off the Catawba fourth with a single and was sacrificed to second. A single by Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) and a walk to Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) loaded the bases for Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC), who launched a 1-0 pitch over the centerfield wall for a grand slam and a 5-1 lead. Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) added a two-run double later in the frame for a 7-1 edge. Tusculum got two runs back in the seventh on a two-out pinch-hit homer by Chuck Roberts (London, ONT, CANADA) and had two runners on, when Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) struck out Robbie Bouman (Sterling, VA) to end the game. Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) earned the win for Catawba, tossing six and two-thirds innings. He allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and improved to 6-2 on the season. O’Connell and Adam Hicks (Bristol, TN) each had two hits for Tusculum, while Baker had a pair for Catawba, including a school record-tying 26th double on the year. ######
