Softball drops doubleheader with Carson-Newman

SALISBURY, NC Carson-Newman swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Eagles won by the scores of 5-0 and 7-6. Carson-Newman improves to 35-8 overall and 6-4 in the SAC, while the Lady Indians fall to 25-24 and 5-5. After three scoreless innings in the opener, the Lady Eagles got a run home in the fourth on a squeeze bunt by Kim Thorne (Dalton, GA). Carson-Newman would break the game open in the sixth with a four-run frame, collecting five straight hits with two outs. LeAndrea Johnson (Chattanooga, TN) and Erin Rutherford (Knoxville, TN) had RBI doubles. Megan Elliott (East Ridge, TN) allowed only four hits in tossing the complete game win to improve to 22-5. Haley Allen (Newport, TN) had three hits, while Johnson and Rutherford each had a pair of hits. Carson-Newman jumped to a 6-0 lead in the second game. Lisa Rogers (Rossville, GA) had a two-run homer in the first and the Lady Eagles benefited from three Catawba errors in the third to plate four runs. Catawba got back in the game in its third on a three-run homer by Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL). Catawba scored a run in the fourth on a wild pitch and would fight back to tie the game in the fifth on a two-out, two-run triple by Vivian Lee (Salisbury, NC). Carson-Newman would answer right back in the sixth as Allen singled home Christi Hampton (Jasper, TN), who had led off the inning with a double. Elliott earned the win in relief for CN, allowing just two hits over two and two-thirds innings of work. Rogers had three hits and three RBI in the win, while Hampton also collected three hits. Rivera had two hits for the Lady Indians as did Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC). #####
