Fairweather takes SAC Baseball Pitcher of Week honors

ROCK HILL, SC -- Carson-Newman shortstop Jonathan Mary and Catawba's right-handed pitcher Matt Fairweather were named South Atlantic Conference Position Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, league officials announced today. This is Fairweather's second honor of the season. Fairweather tossed six and two-thirds innings in final game of the Tusculum series to help Catawba take a one-game lead with three conference games left to play. The 6-1 junior allowed just one earned run and six hits against the second-place Pioneers. With the win, the Lenoir, NC, native improved his record to 6-2 on the year. The Catawba ace edged out Presbyterian's Zach Matthews, who shutout Newberry 5-0 on Saturday, on a tiebreaker determined by number of first place votes. Mary helped lead the Eagles to a 6-0 record last week as the Eagles improved to 27-20-1 and 10-8 in the South Atlantic Conference. The 6-3 sophomore batted .458 with four doubles and six RBIs last week. Mary, a Maryville, Tenn. native, drove in two runs in a win over North Greenville and had three doubles and three RBIs in a sweep of Mars Hill last weekend. For the season, he is batting .325 with 12 doubles, three homeruns and 25 RBIs. The SAC position player and pitcher of the week are determined by a vote of the league's eight sports information directors. #####
