Rivera ties home run record as Softball splits with Mars Hill

MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba and host Mars Hill split a doubleheader in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Ponder Park. Catawba took the opener 6-2, while Mars Hill battled back to take game two 5-4. Catawba is now 26-27 overall and 6-8 in the SAC, while the Lady Lions are 10-43 and 1-11. Catawba got all the runs they needed in the first inning of the opener, scoring five off a two-run homer from Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) and a three-run shot by Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ). Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) was took a perfect game into the seventh, when Amy Whitley (Booneville, MS) broke up the no-hitter with a single to left. Mars Hill scored a pair of runs in the frame, but Ettinger got the win to improve to 16-12. Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) had three hits for Catawba in the opener, while Mehl and Vivan Lee (Salisbury, NC) each had two. The homer by Rivera was her fourth of the season, tying the school mark set be Liz Jennings in 1994. Ettinger allowed just the two hits, while walking none and striking our four. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) led off game two for Catawba with a home run, but the Lady Loins grabbed the lead in the third. Leslie Gray (Fayetteville, NC) doubled, moved to third on a ground out and scored on Tessa Ashwell’s (Roanoke, VA) fifth homerun of the year. Catawba rallied to score three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Mehl plated Corbett with an RBI single and Jeana Craver (Lexington, NC) picked up two RBIs on a single. In the bottom of the sixth, Ashwell singled and Audrey Riffel (Enterprise, KS) doubled with no outs. Jessica Valentine (Emmitsburg, MD) singled to score both Ashwell and Riffel and scored on Amanda Tomlinson’s single to left, giving the Lady Lions a 5-4 lead. Kristi Marszalec (West Bloomfield, MI) retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the win. . #####
