Another monster day by Giles propels Baseball to series sweep

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- For the second consecutive day, Catawba College junior leftfielder Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) powered the Indians to a victory over the Carson-Newman Eagles on Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. Giles went three-for-five, including a pair of home runs, accounting for six RBI to lead the Indians to a 19-6 win. Catawba, the league champion, improves to 36-15 overall and 17-4 in the SAC, while the Eagles fall to 28-23-1 and 10-11. Giles finished the three-game series with four homeruns and 14 RBIs. The Indians added homers by Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) and Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) on Sunday as they pounded out 17 hits. Catawba is the top-seed for next week’s Food Lion SAC Tournament in Rock Hill, SC. The Eagles are the number five seed. Southard also had a productive day for Catawba as he went three-for-four and drove in five runs. The Indians and Eagles combined to hit 12 doubles, nine of which were by Catawba. Nathan Gravley (Cartersville, GA) had two doubles for the Eagles and T.J. Graves (Cincinnati, OH) and Nick Jacobs (Knoxville, TN) each had a double for C-N. The Indians jumped on top early with two runs in both the first and second innings and three in the third inning. Catawba would add four runs in the eighth and ninth inning. Giles' two-run dingers came in the third and fourth innings. Several Catawba season and career records were set as Southard has the career record for RBI with 156, Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) holds the season record for runs in a season with 61 and Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) holds the season record of 150 total bases. ######
