Giles takes SAC Baseball Player of the Week honorsROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba College outfielder Thomas Giles and Mars Hill pitcher Chris Merchant were named South Atlantic Conference Position Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, league officials announced on Monday. Giles, a 6-2 junior from Lynchburg, VA, hit .562 for the week and collected 15 RBI over the week. In the weekend sweep of Carson-Newman that secured the regular season title for the Indians, he went 8-for-13 (.615) with 14 RBI and four homers. In the series opener, he was 4-of-5 with two homers and six RBI, and he capped the weekend with a 3-for-5 day with two more homers and six RBI. Giles raised his average for the year to .312 with nine homers and 42 RBI. Giles was a unanimous selection for Player of the Week. Merchant received seven of eight first place votes for his performances this weekend versus Newberry College. In the series, Merchant picked up the save in game one and then threw a complete game shutout in the second game on Saturday to get his third win of the season. On the day, he threw eight innings and allowed only five hits. He also became the Lions' single-season save leader this past weekend. Merchant is a senior and a team captain. The SAC position player and pitcher of the week are determined by a vote of the league's eight sports information directors. #####
