Men's Basketball tabbed as SAC favoriteHICKORY, NC — Catawba, the defending South Atlantic Conference regular-season co-champions and the SAC Tournament champions, were picked to repeat as the 2001-02 league champions following a vote of the league coaches, which was announced on Thursday. The announcement came at the annual SAC Basketball Press Conference held at the Holiday Inn Select in Hickory, NC. The Indians garnered six of the first place votes to total 62 points and finish ahead of last year's co-champs Wingate, which had two first place votes and 58 points. Presbyterian and Carson-Newman followed with 45 and 43 points, respectively. Catawba returns the bulk of its line-up from last season, missing only Ned Gusic of the starters. Gusic was a second team All-SAC performer and led the Tribe last season in scoring, rebounding and assists. Second team All-SAC Brian Carter returns, as does SAC Tournament MVP Kevin Petty and SAC All-Freshman Team members Alex Luyk and Duke Phipps. Also returning will be Terrence Hamilton, who led the Tribe in scoring and rebounding when he was lost for the year with a broken led after 14 games. Carter, who replaced Hamilton in the starting rotation, averaged 13.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Petty averaged 10.7 points and 3.0 assists, while hitting on 47-of-107 three- point tries. Luyk, a 6-9 center, tossed in 9.0 points and grabbed 5.3 rebounds a game. He led the team with 58 blocks and added 13 three-pointers. Phipps came off the bench for Catawba and tossed in 8.9 points and averaged 3.3 assists per game. He led the team with 58 steals. Others back include, Quentin Bryant, B.J. Robertson, Jacob Parks, Reggie Proctor, Chris Everett, JarMark Parker and Byron Whitehead. Catawba will tip-off the season against Pfeiffer on November 17th. Catawba's non- conference schedule includes Johnson C. Smith, who earned a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight last season, as well as Winston-Salem State, which qualified along with Catawba for the South Atlantic Regional. The Tribe will also host Allen, Claflin, N.C. Central, Livingstone, The Apprentice School, St. Andrews and Strayer. The two non-league road games will be at N.C. Central and Livingstone.
