Baker, Wilson and Gantt head list of Baseball All-SAC award winnersROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba’ coach Jim Gantt and players Thomas Wilson (Smithfield, NC) and Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) earned top baseball honors as The South Atlantic Conference announced its all-conference teams and award winners as part of the Spring Sports Festival Ceremony at Knights Stadium on Wednesday night. Baker was named Co-Player of the Year, along with Kevin White of Presbyterian, while Wilson was named Pitcher of the Year and Gantt, who guided the Indians to the conference championship, was selected baseball Coach of the Year. Baker leads the conference in hitting with a .429 average and set a school and league record with 29 doubles entering the league tournament. He also set a Catawba record for hits in a season with 88 thus far. Baker has added nine homers and 53 RBI. Wilson posted a 6-3 record and a 2.69 ERA throught the regular season and added a second shutout and a career-high 16 strikeout performance to open the league tournament. He entered the tourney with a league-high 106 strikeouts and just 30 walks. Gantt earns Coach of the Year honors second time as he also was honored in 1999. Catawba placed seven members on the ASC All-Conference First and Second Teams. Joining Baker and Wilson, both juniors, on the first team is senior catcher Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) and sophomore designated hitter Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC). Davis is among nation leaders in RBI after collecting a school-record 75 during the regular season. He has hit a team-leading 12 homers and has a .362 average. Second team honors went to outfielders Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) and Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) and pitcher Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC).
