Catawba women's soccer falls to #3 Barry

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Catawba College dropped its second straight game to a top five NCAA II squad, falling to third-ranked Barry University 5-0 in women's soccer action at the UNF/Wingate Inn Labor Day Tournament on Monday afternoon. The loss drops Catawba to 0-2-1 on the season, while Barry improves to 4-0. Catawba trailed only 1-0 at the break, falling behind on Erika O'Brien's goal in the 41st minute. O'Brien lobbed a shot over Catawba keeper Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC) to put the Buccaneers ahead 1-0. The goal was assisted by Pamela McDonald. Barry would get a second goal in the 68th minute from Ashley Snell, then poured on the attack in the final 20 minutes. Following Snell's goal, Marie Gunnarsson received a long punt from the goalkeeper and dribbled by a defender to score just three minutes later. Snell responded at 75:00 for her second goal in the game and Tammie Thorton closed out the scoring five minutes later. Clayton recorded 10 saves for the Lady Indians over her 75 minutes and was relieved by Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL), who had a pair of saves. Barry managed to trigger 31 shots in the game, 19 shots alone were taken in the first half. The Buccaneers went 2-0 in the tournament and recorded a goal differential ratio of plus-seven to win the tournament. Tournament host North Florida went 2-0 in the tournament, placing second, with a goal differential ratio of plus-four.
