Baseball takes SAC Tournament Championship, wins 40th gameFORT MILL, S.C. - Catawba College senior Zach Snyder went seven and two-thirds innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs to lead the top-seeded Indians to the 2004 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament Championship with a 7-2 win over third-seeded Wingate on Sunday afternoon at Knights Stadium. Catawba improves to 40-15 on the season, the most season wins by any athletic program in school history, and will now wait to hear word on a possible berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Wingate falls to 23-33. The Indians got out of the gate quickly in the first, scoring twice before recording an out. Junior Mark Smith led off the game with a single and sophomore Matt Smith followed with a two-run home run to left. The Bulldogs answered with a two-spot in the bottom of the second, tying the score at 2-2. Senior Sherman Greer opened with his 10th round tripper of the season and sophomore Tim Bowman singled in senior Andrew Brockington. Catawba scored runs in each of the middle three innings, opening up a 7-2 lead. Back-to-back hits with two outs in the fourth from the Smith brothers broke the tie as M Mark singled and Matt doubled him home. The Indians crossed the plate three times in the fifth, thanks in part to a two-run shot from sophomore Aaron Rimer. Rimer drove in the final run of the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, scoring junior Matt Baker. After Wingate's two-run second, Snyder limited the Bulldogs to just three hits the rest of the way. Snyder was relieved after walking two consecutive batters in the eighth, but freshman Zach Evans snuffed the rally by striking out Greer. #####
