Southard named SAC Baseball Tournament MVP

ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba College outfielder Spence Southard, who batted .412 with three doubles and one home run, was named Most Valuable Player of the Food Lion SAC Baseball Tournament, the league announced on Monday. Southard helped lead the Indians to the Food Lion Tournament title, going 3-for-4 in the championship game. The senior was one of six Indians to make the All-Tournament team. Joining Southard on the All-Tournament team from Catawba are: Pitchers Thomas Wilson and Matt Fairweather; shortstop Mark Smith, first baseman Matt Smith and second baseman Matt Baker. Wilson struck out 16 in an opening-round win over Mars Hill. Fairweather was the winning pitcher in a win over Carson-Newman, holding the Eagles to eight hits and two runs. The Smith twins each hit .400 and combined to drive in seven runs. Baker had two home runs and six RBI. Tusculum placed three on the squad: George Hanger, Guy O'Connell and reliever Wes Hill. Hill had six strikeouts in six innings and one save. Hanger and O'Connell each hit .474 and each had one home run. Tournament runner-up Wingate placed shortstop David Yount and third baseman Tim Bowman. Yount had nine RBI and three home runs during the tournament. The rest of the All-Tournament team consists of Stuart Kay and Gilmore Stevens of Newberry, T.J. Graves of Carson-Newman and Matt Russell of Mars Hill. #####
