Baseball rallies past USC-Aiken, Davis hits fourth grand slamAIKEN, SC -- Catawba College scored six times in the top of the ninth to rally past host USC-Aiken for a 10-5 win in baseball action at Roberto Hernandez Stadium on Wednesday night. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) and Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) had RBI to put the Tribe up 6-5 before a pinch-hit grand slam by Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) iced the issue. The Indians improve to 41-15, while Aiken falls to 28-25. Catawba got on the board in the opening frame on a sacrifice fly by Spence Southard (Greensborom, NC), but Bradley Key gave the Pacers the lead after an inning on a two-run homer. Matt Smith's sac fly in the third tied the game at 2-2. The Pacers jumped back up 3-2 on a sac fly by Key. A Scott Searles (Boston, MA) single in the sixth tied the game at 3-3, but Aiken would take the lead in the seventh at 4-3 on a homer by Ashley Farr. Catawba battled back again in the eighth as Southard singled home Baker, who had tripled with one out. Tony Hanks would deliver a two-out, RBI single for Aiken in the eighth to put the Pacers up 5-4 heading to the ninth. After a strikeout to start the ninth inning, the next six Indians reached base. Nike Lefko (Faith, NC) reached on an error and Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) singled him to third. Matt Smith hit a slow grounder to first that mishandled, scoring Lefko with the tying run. Baker would then single home the tying run. Southard was intentionally walked to set up Davis, who connected for his fourth grand slam of the season. Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) earned the win in relief to move to 9-2. Baker and Southard each had three hits for Catawba. Wes McColl tossed eight strong innings for Aiken, allowing four runs, on seven hits and three walks, while striking out five in the no-decision. Farr had three hits for USCA, while Key and Hanks each had a pair of hits. #####
