Volleyball falls in three tight games to FMUSALISBURY, NC – Francis Marion swept host Catawba in three tight games in volleyball action at the Catawba Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Patriots improve to 3-3, winning by the scores of 30-28, 31-29 and 33-31. The Lady Indians fall to 0-2. In other action on Saturday, Tampa defeated Francis Marion 30-19, 30-27 and 30-28, Lenoir-Rhyne defeated NC Central 30-21, 30-20 and 30-13, Tampa defeated USC Upstate 30-15, 30-14 and 30-23, Pfeiffer defeated NC Central 30-27, 22-30, 30-14, 27-30 and 15-11 and USC Upstate defeated Pfeiffer 30-23, 30-18 and 30-17. Tampa freshman outside hitter Katelen Dixon (Clearwater, FL) was named the tournament Most Valuable Player and was joined on the all-tournament team by Catawba’s Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC), Francis Marion’s Jessica Bartlett (Richmond, VA), Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kathryn Phillips (Lexington, NC), NC Central’s Patricia Rodrigues (Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL), Pfeiffer’s Jenny Fitch (Batavia, IL) and USC Upstate’s Shannon Pallardy (LaCrosse, WI). In the loss to Francis Marion, Catawba held late leads in each game. The Lady Indians were up 25-22 in the opener, but three straight kills and a block by Bartlett gave the Patriots a 27-26 edge. FMU won the final two points on kills by Kelly Feber (Virginia Beach, VA) and Lezlie Logan (Cleburne, TX). Catawba jumped out 4-0 in game two, but the Patriots came back to go up 19-15. The Lady Indians rallied back and got three kills from Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) in a 7-1 run to take a 29-26 lead. A kill by Bartlett saved a match point and Rachel Matthews (Hartsville, SC) served two aces to even the game. Another Matthews ace completed the five-point run to take the second game. In the third FMU led 17-12 before Catawba stormed back to go up 19-18. The Lady Indians again held a game points after a combo block by Harrison and Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC), but the Patriots got even on a pair of errors and went on to take the win 33-31 on three more Catawba errors.
