Miller, Harrison propel Volleyball past Carson-NewmanSALISBURY, NC – Senior Hope Miller (Newton, NC) served 10 aces, while fellow senior Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) delivered 24 kills as Catawba College knocked off visiting Carson-Newman over four games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians win their fourth straight match and improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 30-26, 30-17, 25-30 and 30-13. The Lady Eagles fall to 11-4 and 0-2. Down 7-4 in the opening game, Harrison had a pair of kills to spark a Catawba run that was capped by a pair of aces by Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, IN) to put the Lady Indians up 13-9. The Lady Eagles tied the game at 16-16 on a kill by Jennifer Holmes (Franklin, TN), but Harrison added two more kills in a run that pushed Catawba back up 22-16. Carson-Newman pulled within 22-19, but Catawba scored seven of the next nine points to grab a 29-21 edge. Catawba roared to a 5-0 lead in game two and went on for an easy win. Harrison had four kills in a 9-0 run that gave the Lady Indians a 17-4 advantage. Harrison finished the game with nine kills and a block. Carson-Newman would take game three. The key run came down 13-12 as the Lady Eagles scored nine consecutive points, including four kills by Holmes. Game four was tied at 7-7 until a Harrison kill put Catawba up for good. Miller took serve at 8-7 and delivered eight aces in 11 tries as the Lady Indians went on top 18-8. Miller would add four aces over the final seven Catawba points. Miller’s 10 aces was one shy of the Catawba record and she added 13 kills and 15 digs. Harrison added four solo blocks to her 24 kills which was one shy of her career-high set last year vs. Carson-Newman. Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) also had double figures in kills with 10, adding four blocks and three aces. Holmes had 13 kills for Carson-Newman, while Kelli Sorensen (Maple Grove, MN) had 10 kills and 12 digs. Blaire Young (Morristown, TN) had 39 digs.
