Miller leads Volleyball to seventh straight winSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba extended its win streak to seven matches with a win over visiting Pfeiffer in volleyball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians closed out their regular season, winning by the scores of 30- 26, 23-30, 30-20 and 30-22. Catawba improves to 12-13 overall, while Pfeiffer falls to 5-28. In the opening game, Catawba used a late run to grab the win. Tied at 18-18, freshmen Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) and Hope Miller (Newton, NC) each had two kills to help Catawba pull out to a 22-19 edge. Pfeiffer closed to within 27-26, but a pancake dig by Meredith Jones (Eden, NC) led to a point and a 28-26 edge, then Hawkins added a solo block before the final point on a Pfeiffer error. The Lady Indians jumped out to a 21-16 lead in the second game, but the Falcons reeled off eight straight points for a 24-21 lead. A pair of kills by Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) pulled Catawba within 24-23, but Pfeiffer scored the final six points. Miryah Bice (Virginia Beach, VA) had a solo and two assisted blocks, while Caire Six (Winston-Salem, NC)had a pair of aces in the run. Catawba controlled the third game. Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE) had a kill and two aces in a run that put the Lady Indians up 9-4, then after a Pfeiffer point, Catawba added another four for a 13-5 edge. Catawba went on to lead 19-8 and 23-12 before Pfeiffer closed to 25-19. Senior Talita McCain (E. Spencer, NC) killed two of the final three points for Catawba. After a quick start by Catawba in the fourth game, Pfeiffer closed within 10-7 on a pair of aces by Kim Teneholz (Divide, CO), but the Lady Indians responded with a run to go on top 18-9. Crystal Bonner (Yadkinville, NC) had a pair of aces, while Miller had a streak of three straight kills and totaled eight in the game. It was the final home match for Catawba seniors McCain and Christina Perkinson (Chesapeake, VA). McCainfinished the match with 11 kills, three digs and a block. Perkinson had four kills, a dig and a block. Miller led the way for Catawba with 17 kills and 21 digs. Bice led Pfeiffer with 11 kills and 20 digs.
