#13 Women's Soccer Advances Past Wingate 2-1 in Food Lion/SAC Tournament Opener

SALISBURY, NC – Junior Kyley Thompson (Hagerstown, MD) scored what proved to be the game winner in 52nd minute propelling #3-seed Catawba College to a 2-1 win over the #6-seeded Wingate Bulldogs in the first-round of the Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament, held Tuesday night at Frock Field. The Lady Indians, improving to 15-1-2, advance to face Carson-Newman at 7:00pm Friday night in Clinton, SC. The Bulldogs end their season at 8-10-1. Wingate jumped on the board first 9:58 into the contest. Veronica Acosta (Simpsonville, SC) scored her fifth on the season firing into the left side of the goal putting the Bulldogs up 1-0. The Tribe tied it at 1-1 as Ashley Boles (Ft. Bragg, NC) took a Carrie Wollaston (Landenberg, PA) pass and scored top-shelf for her second on the year. The lone goal in the second-half came off the foot of Thompson from 30 yards out for her 11th on the campaign. Wingate had quality chances in the second frame but couldn’t convert. Their best chance came with 17 minutes to play as Acosta beat the Tribe defense but her shot deflected off the crossbar and went over the goal. Cathrine Balentine (Charlotte, NC) made two saves for Catawba picking up the win, while Alissa DiDonato (Lawrenceville, GA) made four saves in the losing effort.
