Volleyball falls at Wingate, earns home tournament match

WINGATE, NC -- Wingate University’s Rebecca Brezovec (Durham, NC) had 16 kills and seven blocks as the Bulldogs topped Catawba College 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Wednesday night in Cuddy Arena on the Wingate campus. Wingate won by the scores of 30-26, 30-20, 21-30 and 30-24, improving to 13-15 overall and 8-6 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 12-11 overall and 8-6 in the SAC. The two teams will play again Wednesday, Nov. 10 in the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament at Catawba as the Lady Indians take the tie-breaker by winning four games off the Bulldogs in two matches this year to just three for Wingate. Brezovec was one of four Bulldogs to achieve double-digit kills as Danielle Thompson (Channelview, TX) had 14 kills, while Lauren Alley (Bristol, TN) and Molly Kerns (Bellefontaine, OH) had 13 kills each. Deluca had 39 assists for the Bulldogs. Amanda Siegrist (Wexford, PA) had 20 digs. For Catawba, Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) had 15 kills and four solo blocks, while senior outside hitter Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) contributed 12 kills. Kelly Burdeau (Salisbury, NC) dished out 25 assists, while Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, IN) passed out 22 assists. Crystal Bonner (Yadkinville, NC) led the defense with 17 digs. In the deciding game four, Wingate never trailed. The Bulldogs bolted to a 10-3 lead, capped by a service ace from Melissa Deluca (Bahama, NC). Wingate stretched the lead to 16-6 on a kill by Kerns. Catawba hung tough, cutting the advantage to 28-24 on a kill by Harrison. The Lady Indians would get no closer, as Alley finished the match with a kill to give the Bulldogs the win.
