Women's Soccer suffers another heartbreaker; fall 1-0 to Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles advanced to the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals with an exciting and hard-fought 1-0 win over the Catawba Lady Indians Sunday afternoon at McCown Field. The match was tight throughout as neither team scored in the first half. The match seemed destined for overtime but Erica Stegner (Nicholasville, Ky.) gave C-N the win when she scored on a header that bounced in front of the goal off a cross by Rebecca Angus (Middlesborough, England) at the 87:25 mark of the match. The Lady Eagles were able to prevent Catawba from attempting a shot in the final three minutes and held on for the 1-0 win. The closeness of the match was reflected in the final statistics. The Lady Eagles had 11 shots and the Lady Indians had 10. C-N had five saves and Catawba ended the match with four. With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 18-2-2 and will face Lincoln Memorial next weekend in the national quarterfinals. Catawba ends their season at 16-2-3. "I would just like to thank my assistant coaches for their hard work this season," stated Catawba coach John Cullen. "I would also like to say how proud I am of our team and how hard they worked this season. For such a young team I am very proud of how far they have come this season." #####
