Darden hits for 26 in Women's Basketball season-opener

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College opened its women’s basketball season with a 73-54 win over St. Augustine’s in the Livingstone College Lady Blue Bears Classic on Friday afternoon at New Trent Gym. It was the opener for both teams. Catawba shot 50% in the opening half to build a 35-28 lead. The Lady Indians would heat up to 57% in the final half, while St. Augustine’s hit on just 24%. Catawba also shot well from long range, canning 7-of-10 attempts. The defending South Atlantic Conference Champions were led by Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC), who came off the bench to score a career-high 26 points. The senior canned 12-of-18 from the floor and went 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) added 15 points and Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA) tossed in 11. St. Augustine’s got 21 points from Valicia Brown and 19 from Dana Atkins, who went 11-of-17 at the line. Catawba held a 43-30 edge on the boards, but were out-shot at the line. The Lady Indians were 2-of-6 compared to 16-of-30 for St. Augustine’s. Catawba committed 26 turnovers. #####
