Men's Basketball rolls to 111-66 victory over Allen
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rolled to a 111-66 win over Allen at the Salisbury Roundball Classic on Saturday night at Goodman Gym. The Indians improved to 2-0 on the year, while Allen falls to 0-3. In the first game, Virginia State (1-1) topped Cheyney (1-2) 78-70.
Catawba jumped to a 25-7 lead in the opening seven minutes and never trailed. Classic Most Valuable Player, Helgi Magnusson scored 18 of his team-high 20 points in the opening frame and all 13 Tribe players took part in the scoring. Jolly Manning had 12 points, Brian Frasier and Ahmad Murphy 11 and Andy Thomson followed with 10 points.
The Indians shot 56% from the field and canned 13-of-29 three-pointers. Allen shot just 28% and had 23 turnovers. Lloyd Clinton led the Yellow Jackets with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Therial Davis had 14 points and Timeke Mitchell added 10 points and 11 boards.
Virginia State pulled away from a 17-17 tie in the final 11 minutes of the opening half in their win. The Trojans led 40-33 at the break and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way. Bryan Scott had 15 of his team-high 21 points in the opening half. Jimmie Gerald and Ade’ Mason each scored a dozen points, while Kanandi Hall added 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Trojans hit on 52% from the field, including 58% in the final half. Cheyney shot 39%, but stayed in the game at the line, hitting on 25-of-33 tries to just 10-of-25 for Virginia State. The Wolves were led by Asaad Brown, who scored 23 points, while Maurince Bryant and Iren Rainey each had 10 points.
