Women's Basketball stays perfect with 60-50 win at Livingstone

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College defeated host Livingstone 60-50 in women’s basketball action at the Lady Blue Bears Classic on Saturday afternoon at New Trent Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 2-0, while Livingstone falls to 2-1. Catawba scored the first 14 points and kept Livingstone off the board until a steal and layup by Crystal Jones with 11:37 to go in the opening half. From that point, the Lady Blue Bears would charge back and get withing 22-18 at the 1:24 mark of the half before trailing 26-20 at the break. Livingstone would eventually tie the game at 42-42 with 6:40 remaining on a three-pointer by Denissa Herndon. Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA) would hit a jumper and layup to keep the Lady Indians ahead at 46-44 with 4:43 left and a jumper by Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA) pushed the lead to 48-44 at the 4:04 mark. Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC), who earned MVP honors, completed a three-point play at the 3:00 mark to give Catawba a 51-46 lead. Two free throws by Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) and a layup by Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) gave the Lady Indians a 55-47 edge with 1:01 remaining. Catawba hit on 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to secure the win. Carmon and Davis were the only Lady Indians to reach double figures with 10 apiece. Carmon had nine rebounds as did Foster, who added eight points. Kautelza Richard had 11 to pace Livingstone, while Lazhai Stewart had 10 points and seven rebounds. #####
