Swimmers take wins in 15 of 18 events at Catawba Invite

SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College took first place at the Catawba Invite Women’s Swim Meet held at Johnson Pool this weekend. The lady Indians scored 289 points, while Pfeiffer was second with 199. Limestone (82) placed third and Salem (60) was fourth. On Friday, Catawba took first place in a pair of relay swims, the 200 medley and 800 freestyle. Erin Hyde (Lilburn, GA) broke her own 50 backstroke record in the opening leg of the 200 medley relay with a time of :29.44, lowering the record by .12 seconds. Freshman Christine Ofslager (Midlothian, VA) had a lifetime best swim of 19:37.85 in the 1650 free. She was second to Pfeiffer’s Rachel Smith, who had a time of 19:36.27. Saturday saw Catawba win two more relays (400 medley and 200 free), while winning five of six individual events. Freshman Leigh Spada (Shelby, NC) won the 50 free (:26.50) and the 200 free ((2:03.64) and Hyde took the 100 back (1:03.22) and 100 fly (1:05.06). Lauren Smith (Seekonk, MA) won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.80). Pfeiffer’s Kirby Venzin won the 400 IM (5:00.88). The meet wrapped up on Sunday with the Lady Indians winning six events, including the 400 freestyle relay (3:56.45). Individually, Smith won the 200 IM (2:20.51) and the 200 breaststroke (2:35.00). Hyde won the 200 back (2:14.53), while Spada won the 100 free (:56.16) and Ofslager the 500 free (5:37.80), both with lifetime best swims. Venzin, of Pfeiffer, took the 200 fly (2:31.88). #######
