Cox scores 1,000 point, dishes out 14 assists in Women's Basketball winSALISBURY, NC -- Senior guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) scored 22 points, surpassing 1,000 for her career, and dished out a near school-record 14 assists to lead host Catawba to an 86-72 win over North Greenville in women’s basketball action on Friday night at the Comfort Suites Classic at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 4-0, while North Greenville falls to 1-4. In the opening game, Lenoir-Rhyne (4-0) topped Virginia State (0-3) 65-61. After a steal and layin by Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA), Cox canned a trio of three-pointers to put the Lady Indians up 11-2 after three minutes. A layup by Kendall Prescott (Exeter, NH) helped Catawba to its largest lead of the half at 23-11 at the 12:11 mark. The Crusaders would mount a comeback and tied the score at 27-27 on a three-pointer by Jessica Davis (Lexington, SC) with 7:51 before the half. Catawba never relinquished the lead and would take a 46-35 lead to the break. Cox finished the opening half scoring 20 points and dishing out seven assists with no turnovers. Earlana Jackson (Greenville, SC) helped keep North Greenville close with 12 points and five boards at the break. Catawba upped its lead to 15 early in the second half after a layin by Carmon at the 17:03 mark to put the Lady Indians on top 56-41. The Crusaders would not go away and whittled the lead down to 62-58 on a layin by Dena Johnson (Greenwood, SC). A jumper by Jackson with 5:19 left brought North Greenville as close as they would get at 71-68 as Prescott answered with a three-point play and a layup for a 76-68 edge. Cox finished the game with 22 points and her 14 assists was just one shy of the school record. She had just two turnovers in 30 minutes of action. Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) followed with 15 points, while Prescott added 14 and Carmon 12. The Lady Indians helped force 28 Crusader turnovers by recording 15 steals. Catawba had just 12 miscues. Jackson (26 points, 10 rebounds) and Johnson (12 points, 13 rebounds) posted double-doubles for North Greenville. Shea Sims (Hendersonville, TN) would fire in 16 points, hitting four three-pointers. The Crusaders held a 50-33 edge on the boards, but were out-scored at the line 16-5. #####
