Women's Basketball moves to 5-0 with 77-57 win over Virginia State

SALISBURY, NC -- Four players reached double figures as host Catawba defeated Virginia State 77-57 in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Comfort Suites Classic at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 5-0, while Virginia State falls to 0-4. In the opening game, Lenoir-Rhyne (5-0) got a last second basket to defeat North Greenville (1-5) 74-73. Catawba dominated the opening half and led 41-20 at the break. The Lady Indians canned 14-of-32 shots (43.8%), while Virginia State shots just 25% (6-of-24). Catawba also held a 25-16 edge on the boards in the opening 10 minutes and forced 11 turnovers to only five for the Lady Indians. Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA) opened the game for Catawba with a three-pointer and Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) scored six straight points as the Lady Indians would jump to an 11-0 lead. A jumper by Jenny Volpicelli (Concord, NC) gave the Lady Indians their largest lead of the game at 36-11. The shooting was reversed in the final half as Virginia State charged back to within five after a jumper by Erica Glasper (Richmond, VA), making the score 47-42 with 12:58 remaining. The Trojans hit eight of their first 11 shots of the half, while Catawba hit just 29% in the final stanza. Consecutive three-pointes by Davis and Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) put the Lady Indians up 58-44 at the 8:41 mark. Virginia State made one last run, cutting the lead to 61-54 on a jumper by Jennifer Rhodan (Dale City, VA) with 6:24 remaining, but Catawba connected on ten straight free throws in the final 5:16 to seal the win. Cox was named the Classic MVP after leading Catawba with 13 points and eight assists with just one turnover. Darden also fired in 13 points, while Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) added 12 points and eight rebounds. Glasper, who was named to the All-Classic team, had 12 points for the Trojans. Rhodan and Felicia Gibbs (Bloomfield, NJ) each tossed in 10 points in the loss. Joining Cox and Glasper on the All-Classic team was Catawba's Kendall Prescott (Exeter, NH), Earlana Jackson (Greenville, SC) of North Greenville and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Crystal Clary (Hampton, VA) and Lanica Williams (Newport News, VA). Clary hit the winning shot against North Greenville with 1.6 seconds remaining. #####
