Magnusson paces Men's Basketball to third straight win

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College and Lenoir-Rhyne both went 2-0 this weekend as the host Indians defeated Barber-Scotia 77-60 and Lenoir-Rhyne topped Bluefield State 91-61 in menís basketball action at the Walt Baker Classic at Goodman Gym on Sunday afternoon. Catawba improves to 5-2, while the Sabers fall to 1-10. Lenoir-Rhyne moves to 4-3 with Bluefield State going to 0-8. Catawba scored the opening 10 points against the Sabers and never trailed. Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) hit a pair of early three-pointers to spark the Tribe. A Brian Graves (Newport News, VA) at the 2:49 mark of the opening half increased the lead to 35-17 and Jamel Hamilton (Virginia Beach, VA) sent the Tribe to a 41-22 lead at the break with a trey with 33 seconds left. The Indians stayed up by double digits the rest of the way, pushing the margin to 23 at 52-29 on a layin by Magnusson with 15:47 remaining. Barber-Scotia cut the deficit to 13 on a three-point play by Karheem Glover (Brooklyn, NY) with 7:21 left at 61-48, but Catawba responded and went back on top 71-560 with 3:25 to go. Magnusson paced the Tribe with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Andy Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND) added 13 points and nine boards. Rokus Bartasius (Kaunus, LITHUANIA) also reached double figures with 10 points. Glover recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Sabers. Troy Pierson (Brooklyn, NY) had 13 points and six assists. Lenoir-Rhyne used a 29-8 run over the last 14 minutes of the first half in its win over Bluefield State. The Bears led 15-14 at the 14:14 mark then raced to a 44-22 edge at the break. The Bears shot 55% in the opening half and helped cause 21 turnovers by the Big Blues. Stephen Hinds (Winston-Salem, NC) had 18 of his game-high 24 points in the opening stanza, hitting on 7-of-8 from the field, including a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range. The Bears would build it lead to 42 at 89-47 in the closing minutes. Bluefield scored the final 11 points of the contest. Hinds finished with 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor. Roman Davis (Greensboro, NC) and Tony Connelly (Charlotte, NC) each added 16 points. Josh Sizemore (Beckley, WV) had 22 points to lead Bluefield State, while Corey Love (Red Springs, NC) added 11. George Hollie (Charlotte, NC) had 10 points and 10 assists. Lenoir-Rhyne shot 64% for the contest and held a 27-20 edge on the boards. #####
