Women's Basketball falls to #7 ShawSALISBURY, NC -- The seventh-ranked Shaw University Lady Bears got a game-high 25 points from Kiarsha Curtis (Capital Heights, MD) and went on to defeat host Catawba 87-74 in womenís basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Shaw moves to 3-0 with the victory, while the Lady Indians fall to 5-2. Catawba hit on eight of its first 11 shots in breaking down the Shaw press to grab a 24-12 lead after just nine minutes. Lady Indian point guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) dished out 10 of her 12 assists in the opening seven minutes. Curtis would start the Lady Bear comeback with consecutive three-pointers to put Shaw within 24-18 at the 10:20 mark. Curtis would give Shaw its first lead since the opening minutes with a three-pointer with 2:14 to go in the half. Catawba did not score in the final five minutes of the first half and trailed 38-35 at the break. Shaw connected on eight three-pointers in the opening half and held a 25-17 edge in rebounding. Curtis, who had 14 points at the break, and Bilisa Perkins (Syracuse, NY), who tallied 12 in the opening half, combined for seven of the eight triples. Catawba took a lead early in the second half, going up 50-45 on a jumper by Cox with 14:40 left, but Shaw ran off 10 straight points to take control. Nastassia Boucicault (Brooklyn, NY) had the first six points of the run, finishing the game with 21 points and 12 assists. Shaw built a 12-point lead at 73-61 with 5:44 to go, but saw the Lady Indians rally to within six at 73-67 following a jumper by Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA) with 4:33 remaining. A three-pointer by Boucicault and another by Curtis rebuilt the 12-point bulge and the Lady Bears went on to lead by as many as 15 in the final minute. Curtisí 25 points and Boucicaultís 21 led Shaw, while Perkins added 17 off the bench. Jessica Hawkins (Raleigh, NC) had nine points, 10 rebounds and seven steals. The Lady Bears connected on 12 of its 30 launched from behind the arc. Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) scored 16 points off the bench to pace Catawba, while Davis added 13 and Ingrid Easter (Cana, VA) 12. Jenny Volpicelli (Concord, NC) added 10 points off the bench. #####
