Women's Basketball cruises to 66-35 win over Saint Paul's

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College defeated visiting Saint Paulís University 66-35 in womenís basketball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 6-2, while Saint Paulís falls to 0-8. The Lady Tigers scored the gameís first four points, but Catawba then scored nine straight and took command. A pair of free throws by Jenny Volpicelli (Concord, N.C.) pushed the Catawba advantage to 21-10 at the 9:52 mark and the Lady Indians went on to a 33-14 lead just before the half. Catawba enjoyed a 24-15 edge on the boards in the opening half and held Saint Paulís to just 21% shooting from the field. Catawba continued to increase its lead in the second half. The largest lead for the Lady Indians came with just over two minutes to play at 64-27. Catawba would score 25 points off 23 Lady Tiger turnovers and held a 44-31 edge on the boards. Catawba would connect on 44.3% (27-of-61) of its shots from the floor to just 24.5% (13-of-52) for the Lady Tigers. Isiaette Darden (Wilson, N.C.) and Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, N.C.) each came off the bench to tally 10 points to lead Catawba. All but two players scored for the Lady Indians, while all but one grabbed a rebound. Stephanie Valentine (Charlotte, N.C.) led the way with six boards. Alice Gaines (Laurel, Md.) led Saint Paulís with nine points and grabbed five rebounds. #####
