Women's Basketball returns from break and takes win over UNC-PembrokeSALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College used a strong second half and pulled away from the visiting UNC-Pembroke Braves to earn a 68-50 victory in women’s basketball action on Thursday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 7-3 with the win, while UNCP sees a six-game win streak come to an end and fall to 7-3. Each team struggled with its shooting as they returned from the holiday break. Catawba hit on just six of its first 21 shots, while the Braves connected on only 4-of-26. Pembroke led only briefly with the largest advantage coming at 11-8 with 11:05 remaining in the opening half. A pair of free throws by Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) and a jumper by Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, Va.) gave the Lady Indians the lead for good at 12-11 with 10:08 to play. Catawba pulled out to a 23-12 edge with 6:09 to go in the opening stanza, but the Braves rallied after their cold shooting start, scoring 10 straight points to pull within 23-22 at the 2:49 mark. Cox would hit a pair of three-pointers in the final minute of the opening half to stake Catawba to a 31-24 lead. Cox would stay hot, hitting two more three-pointers to open the second half and after Davis sank a third straight for the Lady Indians, Catawba led 40-32. Catawba continued to increase its advantage and held a 68-46 lead in the closing minutes. The Lady Indians would hit on 45% of its second half chances and held a 50-36 edge on the boards for the contest. Cox paces Catawba with 20 points, canning six three-pointers, and added eight assists and five rebounds. Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, Va.) added 14 points, while Davis added 10 points and seven boards. Kristin Vaughan (San Antonio, Tex.) led Pembroke with 18 points, while Danielle Richardson (Jacksonville, Fla.) had 15 points. Lindsay Bartolf (Pittsford, N.Y.) was held to 10 points, half of her season average, and had just two points after the break. #####
