Lander improved to 4-5 with a 61-59 win over Carson-Newman (8-3), while the host Lady Indians (8-3) claimed a 63-54 victory over Livingstone.
Catawba built a 37-18 halftime lead and held on to defeat the Lady Blue Bears. The Lady Indians used a 16-2 run early in the opening half and led by double-digits until the final minute. Livingstone was able to cut the deficit to six points at 60-54 with 33 seconds left following a three-point play by Kim Westray (Norfolk, Va.), but Catawba hit on three of four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
The Lady Indians helped themselves to the big halftime edge by shooting 45% (14-of-31) to just 30% (8-of-27) for the Blue Bears. Livingstone also committed 18 first-half turnovers. That would be reversed in the last 20 minutes as the Lady Indians hit on six-of-29 tries (21%).

Livingstone was hurt by turnovers (29 for the game) and poor free throw shooting, hitting on just 9-of-26 (35%) attempts. Catawba was 22-of-33 (67%) at the charity stripe.

Lander scored the final 11 points to knock off Carson-Newman. Down 59-50 with three minutes remaining, Jennifer Hukill (Greensboro, N.C.) hit a jumper and Tracy Jacobs (Shaker Heights, Ohio) added a three-pointer following a Lady Eagle turnover to trim the margin to 59-55 with 2:02 left. Natasha Hemphill (Gaffney, S.C.) recorded a steal and three-point play to make the margin 59-58 with 55 seconds remaining.
Carson-Newman would suffer a fourth turnover in just under two minutes on the ensuing inbounds play and Lashaundra Dubose (Timmonsville, S.C.) gave the Lady Bearcats their first lead since the half on a jumper with 24 seconds remaining. Brooke Johnson (Seymour, Tenn.) missed two free throws with 10 seconds left and Jacobs added one for Lander with six seconds remaining. Brittaney Gooch (Franklin, Kent.) had a final chance for C-N, but she missed a free throw with 1.9 seconds left.
The Lady Eagles scored the first seven points and did not trail until Lander went ahead 31-29 on a layup by Janet Williams (Greenville, S.C.) at the 2:24 mark of the opening half. Neither team scored from that point the rest of the half. Johnson tied the game on a basket at the 19:32 mark of the final half and the Lady Eagles did not trail again until the final minute.
Jacobs led Lander with 18 points and eight rebounds off the bench. She was the only Lady Bearcat in double figures. Johnson, a freshman, had a double-double for Carson-Newman with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Carson-Newman held a 44-38 edge on the boards, but hit just 36% from the field and 59% at the line.
