Women's Basketball falls to Lander at New years Shootout

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Lander University picked up its second win, while Carson-Newman earned a split in two games with a victory in second day action at the Comfort Suites New Years Shootout women’s basketball tournament held on Monday afternoon at Goodman Gym on the Catawba College Campus.  Lander defeated host Catawba 64-45 and improved to 5-5, while Catawba fell to 8-4.  Carson-Newman, now 9-3, rolled to an 85-51 win over Livingstone, dropping the Lady Blue Bears to 3-6.
Lander jumped to a 17-point halftime led on Catawba as the Lady Indians struggled shooting from the floor.  Catawba hit only  two of its first 24 shots and trailed 16-4 after 10 minutes.  Isiaette Darden (Wilson, N.C.) gave Catawba a quick spark with a three-pointer and steal and layup to trim the deficit to 16-9, but the Lady Bearcats got a pair of jumpers by Jacauay White (Lawrenceville, Ga.) to regain momentum.  Catawba shot just 15% (5-of-35) in the opening half, while Lander canned 13-of-29 shots (45%).

The Lady Bearcats extended their lead to 35-14 at the opening of the second half until Catawba began to whittle away at the lead.  Catawba hit three-pointers on three straight tips, two by Ashley Cox (Richmond, Va.) to claw within 43-33 and a jumper by Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, Va.) cut the deficit to 43-35 with 9:27 left.

Lander would not let Catawba close the gap any further and would increase the lead back to 20 in the closing seconds.  All-tournament performer Natasha Hemphill (Gaffney, S.C.) had 16 points and nine rebounds to pace Lander.  White added 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.  Cox scored 16 points Catawba, while Darden added 15 off the bench.

Carson-Newman connected on 11 of its first 14 shots and went on to defeat Livingstone 85-51.  The Lady Eagles jumped to a quick 28-8 lead after just over eight minutes with their hot shooting.  C-N hit on 16-of-20 before finally cooling off to just 59% (17-of-29) for the opening half.  Livingstone hit just 9-of-28 (32%) in the opening frame.

Leading 47-21 at the break, Carson-Newman stormed ahead by 65-29 by the 11:06 mark of the second half.  Freshman center Brooke Johnson (Seymour, Tenn.) led four Lady Eagles in double figures with 17 and added eight rebounds.  Kala Greene ((Talbott, Tenn.) came off the bench to score 15 points, while Brittaney Gooch (Franklin, Kent.) had 13 and Giovanni Booker (Orlando, Fla.) 12.  Carson-Newman finished the game with 10 three-pointers in 19 tries and held a 36-25 edge on the boards.  Love Brown (Norfolk, Va.) had 15 points for Livingstone with Sherree Gillespie (Salisbury, N.C.) tossing in 14 with six rebounds.
