Miller leads Volleyball into SAC Tournament Final

GREENEVILLE, TN -- Hope Miller recorded a double-double with 19 kills and 27 digs as sixth-seeded Catawba College upset second seeded Carson-Newman College in four games Saturday night in a semifinal match of the 2001 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament at Alpine Arena. The tournament is being held in conjunction with the Food Lion SAC Fall Sports Festival this weekend on the campus of Tusculum College. The Lady Indians won the match by scores of 24-30, 30-21, 30-25, 30-26. Catawba, winners of nine in a row, improves to 14-13 overall and advances to Sunday's Tournament final as they face top-seeded Presbyterian College. Carson-Newman, last season's SAC Tournament champion, falls to 24-13. Like in Saturday's upset of #3 Wingate University, Catawba fell behind early in dropping the first frame 30-24. But a late rally paced the Tribe to wins in the last three games to advance to Sunday's final. Crystal Bonner added 24 digs, while Lettie Wilkes made 56 assists in the win. Heather Hawkins played a big factor up front recording match-best nine blocks. Carson-Newman was led by All-SAC second team pick Kendra Rickertson who tallied a double-double with 24 kills and 18 digs in the loss.
